Dangers of a Cracked Crown
Your chimney has many different components that all work together to allow it to function properly. Some pieces keep moisture and debris out, while others are fundamental for the structural integrity of your chimney. Chimney crowns are just one of these pieces. They play a critical role in making sure water doesn’t creep into your chimney.
What is a Chimney Crown?
Your chimney crown is a concrete slab that covers the very top of your chimney. It’s installed around the flue opening, and typically has a slight downward angle to encourage water flow and snow away from the inside of your chimney.
What Happens When Your Chimney Crown Is Damaged
We know that chimney crowns play a vital role in keeping water out, but what happens when that layer of defense is not intact? Most of the issues are directly related to water, but the issues vary based on severity, too. Some issues include:
- Breaking down brick and mortar and severe structural deterioration
- Mold growth inside chimney components, or inside surrounding walls
- Damage to the chimney liner – could require complete replacement
- Rotting from water in walls, ceilings, and floors around your chimney
- Damage to the fireplace damper
- Unpleasant smell that could get worse as the water sits.
How Could Damage to the Crown Occur
Like anything, overtime wear and tear can occur. Your chimney is subject to rain, wind, snow, and even falling branches occasionally. The elements can take a toll on your chimney, especially the crown as it’s on the very top of the structure. Lightning strikes or earthquakes can also impact the structure.
Another common source of damage comes in the winter when we experience frost and thaw cycles. Even the smallest crack in the concrete of your chimney crown can allow water inside the crack, freeze and expand, and then contract as the water thaws. This causes the cracks to gradually become larger allowing for more damage overtime.
How to Get Ahead of Chimney Crown Damage
It is highly recommended to have annual chimney inspections and sweeps. By doing this, you get eyes on all aspects of your chimney at least once a year. Since your chimney crown is on the roof, you may not even recognize damage before you start to see symptoms of the damage.
If chimney professionals find small, hairline cracks, they can seal it and potentially prevent future damage.
